In response to Lord Davies’ 2011 report on the slow rate of progress towards gender diversity in FTSE 100 and 250 boardrooms, Cass Business School, part of City University London, and the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) have announced a new initiative. From April to June 2012 they will be running an invitation only seminar series for outstanding female chief executives from the UK voluntary sector who are open to serving on private sector boards.

CFDG has published Managing risk in charities: Lessons from the past decade and a look into the futuretoday at its Risk Conference 2012. Based on research by Paul Bennett and Tim Gage, two researchers from Cass Business School, this paper explores themes in the development of risk management in the sector and makes recommendations for improving practice. The research was based on 10 years of findings from the CFDG/PKF Risk Surveys, focus groups with senior finance professionals in the sector and interviews with a case study identified as demonstrating good practice.

UK family foundations – which have contributed £6.4 billion to charitable causes in the past five years – play a crucial role in addressing social issues in the absence of adequate state funding and amongst increasing economic uncertainty, finds the fourth annual Family Foundation Giving Trends 2011 report. The report, produced by Pears Foundation and the ESRC Research Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy at Cass Business School, found giving from foundations grew by 27% in the past five years (outpacing corporate and public giving).

UK foundations gave an estimated £290 million to international development and related causes in 2009/10, a new study shows. The vast majority of the grants were made to civil society organisations in the UK and developing countries – equal to almost half the bilateral aid support given by the Department for International Development (DFID) to such organisations. The findings come from a study carried out by Cass Business School for The Nuffield Foundation, The Baring Foundation and Paul Hamlyn Foundation, all of whom are international funders.
