Michael Mercieca has been appointed chief executive of Young Enterprise, the UK’s leading enterprise education charity. Mercieca is the former director of finance and operations at The Prince’s Trust, a post he took up in June 2003. He was responsible for finance and corporate Support Services, programme management and design and operations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

“John Lewis” style, social enterprise schools should be piloted in some of the most deprived areas of the country. A report published today, Social Enterprise Schools, by think-tank, Policy Exchange, says that the government should consider allowing private companies to set up and run schools under a social enterprise model. Teachers should be encouraged to take a stake in the school which would create strong incentives to drive up standards. The report says that allowing private providers to take over the running of publicly run schools will create new places at a time when there is a severe shortage in many parts of the country.

Michael Gove, the Secretary of State for Education, has proclaimed the Big Society success of the Government's academies programme, announcing another milestone as the number of academies in England reaches 1,500. Academies are a key element of building a school system in which teachers have more power and in which they are more accountable to parents - not politicians. Though they have faced opposition from the Labour Party and many trade unions.
